frog Product Design Engineer (Fixed Term)
At Capgemini Invent, we believe difference drives change. As inventive transformation consultants, we blend our strategic, creative and scientific capabilities, collaborating closely with clients to deliver cutting-edge solutions. Join us to drive transformation tailored to our client's challenges of today and tomorrow. Informed and validated by science and data. Superpowered by creativity and design. All underpinned by technology created with purpose.
At frog we are united by our shared passion for outcomes that transform the human experience. We accomplish these outcomes by taking on complex challenges, big asks, and things that have never been done before. We look beyond point solutions and apply design to the creation of new strategies, systems, and - in some cases - entirely new businesses. We know that takes all types of people. We believe that diverse backgrounds and experiences create a stronger frog.
Our work is transformational because our people are extraordinary. frogs are analytical and artistic, conservative and unconventional, technical and whimsical. We look for hybrid talents and build teams around divergent expertise, which allows us to solve problems and uncover opportunities in unique ways. frogs are some of the best talent in the world, and together we advance the human experience through design.
Your Role
This is an on-site Position - located in Boulder, CO
Its a Fixed Term - minimum 6 month contract with the possiblity of extension
The Position:
Mechanical engineers at frog are embedded in the design team to deliver innovative design solutions to problems that seem impossible. While we do rethink traditional products, our work goes beyond the expected to work across scales and product categories, from consumer products to transportation to store pop-ups and city scale architectures to physically mediated experiences. We brainstorm concepts, build evaluative prototypes, study emerging technologies, architect products, create manufacturing strategies, and ensure that products reflect the design intent through production – all this while evaluating, communicating, and balancing conflicting project requirements. We collaborate with frogs, clients, suppliers, and partners. We ensure products are feasible, yet as a team, we are highly collaborative across disciplines, welcome new perspectives, and challenge each other to make sure that our work shines.
The ideal candidate will be excited about the evolution of design: we are no longer just designing isolated objects, but elements of an increasingly large and complex connected ecosystem. The ideal candidate will champion the idea that for design to succeed in today’s complex world, we can no longer isolate hardware from software from services – meaningful, impactful design is a holistic endeavor. This is the backdrop against which our mechanical engineering must contribute and fit into.
This Role:
This is an exciting on-site role with our client in Boulder, CO. You'll be embedded full-time working directly alongside our client's internal softgoods design and engineering teams. You'll own the prototyping lifecycle end-to-end: turning early concepts into high-fidelity, production-representative samples, developing the prototyping process, the tooling to build them, and partnering with test engineering to prove they perform.
This is hands-on work — expect as much time in the lab as at the CAD workstation, with build iterations turning around in days. If you love the challenge of engineering rigor applied to materials that bend, stretch, and breathe, this is it.
The Contribution:
- Innovate. Solve problems and address whatever challenge may arise, including the unique constraints softgoods materials bring to design and manufacturing.
- Excel at core engineering tasks: design, prototyping, analysis, 3D CAD modeling (including Class-A surfaces), and documentation.
- Analyze product geometry, develop tooling and fixture design concepts and CAD for softgoods components (textiles, silicone, leather, and soft polymers).
- Engineer proof-of-concept prototypes and define prototyping processes for small build quantities.
- Perform First Article Inspection (FAI) and observe tooling setup, feeding learnings back into ongoing process and tooling improvements.
- Prepare cut/print files for fabrication equipment (e.g., Zund cutter, laser, 3D printer) as needed.
- Step in to support hands-on fabrication during peak times.
Qualifications & Experience
You Are:
Someone who wants to influence their own development. You’re looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies, and where a job title is not considered the final definition of who you are, but the starting point. You bring to the organization the following competencies:
- BSME or similar educational background.
- 6-8 years of experience in product design engineering with consumer electronics, softgoods, or related industries.
- Proven ability to lead complex design efforts and deliver results in cross-functional environments
- Solid 3D modeling capabilities (NX preferred), including Class-A surface development.
- Product architecture development, including feasibility studies, sizing, technology integration, mechanism design and analysis.
- Exceptional prototyping capabilities.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and design constraints, including injection molding, machining, softgoods (textiles, films, synthetics, leather, adhesives), and manufacturing process documentation.
- Experience collaborating with vendors on DFM/DFA, tooling and fixture design, and First Article Inspection (FAI).
- Tolerance analysis and GD&T-based mechanical drawings (ASME Y14.5) to specify and communicate design intent.
- Passion for design and creating products that resonate with people.
- Self-motivated, excellent communicator, and a collaborative, fearless, positive team player who thrives balancing great design with short deadlines and contributing beyond your defined role.
Qualified candidates are encouraged to include an online or PDF portfolio with their application. Note that this job is for an on-site position in Boulder, CO.
