About the Role
We are seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to support the safety and reliability of autonomous robotic vehicle systems. This role includes identifying hazards and risks using Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), supporting the definition of safety requirements, and implementing safety measures throughout the product development lifecycle. The Functional Safety Engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate safety into design, development, verification, and validation activities while ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote a strong culture of safety and compliance across the organization by ensuring that safety remains a core element of daily operations.
- Contribute to the development of functional safety concepts and requirements for autonomous vehicle control systems.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of functional safety lifecycles.
Conduct safety analyses, including STPA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA). - Collaborate with hardware and software engineering teams to ensure proper allocation of safety requirements within the design and development process.
- Review safety verification and validation activities, such as safety testing and simulation.
- Ensure adherence to internal safety processes and workflows informed by industry-relevant safety standards (e.g., ISO 25119, ISO 13849, IEC 61508) and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and maintain safety documentation, including safety plans, safety cases, and safety reports.
- Participate in both internal and external safety audits and assessments.
- Provide technical guidance and support to project teams on functional safety-related matters.
- Stay current on advancements in functional safety practices and autonomous vehicle technologies.
Your Profile:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related field.
- Relevant certifications such as Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE), Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP), Automotive Functional Safety Professional (AFSP), Functional Safety Engineer, or similar credentials are highly preferred.
Experience:
- 3-8 years of experience in functional safety engineering, preferably within robotics, automotive, heavy machinery, mining equipment, or agricultural machinery industries.
- Hands-on experience with functional safety activities using STPA.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of functional safety standards.
- Foundational skills in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks using STPA, FMEA, and FTA.
- Knowledge of safety lifecycle processes and safety integrity levels
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills for addressing complex safety and compliance issues.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills to maintain safety records and compliance documentation.
- Ability to analyze safety data, perform risk assessments, and identify improvement opportunities.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including guiding cross-functional teams and influencing stakeholders across levels.
- Ability to present and summarize reports and technical analyses for leadership, customers, and regulatory authorities.
The base compensation range for this role in the posted location is: $76,200 to $187,740 / year.
Capgemini provides compensation range information in accordance with applicable national, state, provincial, and local pay transparency laws. The base compensation range listed for this position reflects the minimum and maximum target compensation Capgemini, in good faith, believes it may pay for the role at the time of this posting. This range may be subject to change as permitted by law.
The actual compensation offered to any candidate may fall outside of the posted range and will be determined based on multiple factors legally permitted in the applicable jurisdiction.

It is not typical for candidates to be hired at or near the top of the posted compensation range.
In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for additional compensation such as variable incentives, bonuses, or commissions, depending on the position and applicable laws.
