Lead Google Edge SRE

Overview

This role is responsible for operating and developing the Google Edge platform within a highly distributed hybrid-cloud environment. The specialist will work across multiple edge sites, ensuring platform reliability, automating operations, improving observability, and coordinating activities with cross-functional teams.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and support Google Edge platform services, including provisioning, lifecycle management, upgrades, configuration, access control, and security hardening.
  • Ensure availability, latency, capacity, resilience, and overall performance targets (SLIs/SLOs, error budgets) for edge workloads across multiple distributed environments.
  • Implement, maintain, and evolve observability for distributed edge environments, including metrics, logs, traces, alerting strategies, dashboards, and service-level indicators.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues across edge compute resources, networking, hybrid-cloud connectivity, and service dependencies.
  • Participate in and coordinate on-call rotations supporting remote Edge locations with resource constraints, ensuring efficient incident response and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with development, platform, network, and security teams on maintenance windows, software/firmware rollouts, resilience testing, capacity planning, and failover strategies.
  • Maintain and improve documentation, runbooks, architecture diagrams, and operational guidelines tailored for hybrid cloud + edge environments.
  • Mentor mid-level engineers, provide guidance on troubleshooting, automation, observability, and reliability practices.
  • Lead technical initiatives focused on automation, process improvement, reduction of operational toil, and optimization of platform sustainability.
  • Support operational planning, including reliability roadmaps, readiness reviews, and alignment of platform goals with business and engineering needs.

Required Experience

  • 4–7 years in SRE, DevOps, Cloud Infrastructure, or Platform Engineering roles.
  • Experience working with hybrid and on-prem workloads or distributed multi-site environments.
  • Practical experience with CI/CD, observability platforms, incident management, and operational automation.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or contributing to team development and cross-team technical direction.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong networking fundamentals, including VPNs, edge routing, DNS, load balancing, and low-latency architectures.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Ansible), automation frameworks, and scripting (Python, Bash, Go).
  • Hands-on experience implementing observability for distributed and resource-constrained edge nodes.
  • Direct or indirect experience with Google Edge platform, Anthos, GKE on-prem, or comparable hybrid Kubernetes ecosystems.
  • Solid understanding of Kubernetes (deployments, storage, networking, node pools, cluster lifecycle).

Nice to Have

  • GCP experience: VPC, Load Balancing, Artifact or Container Registry, Cloud Build, IAM.
  • Certifications such as CKA, CKAD, Google Professional DevOps Engineer.
  • Experience managing multi-cluster fleets, GitOps workflows, or hybrid-cloud operational patterns.

Soft Skills

  • Strong ownership mentality, clear communication, structured and calm incident handling.
  • Ability to mentor peers, provide technical leadership, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proactive approach focused on reliability, prevention, and continuous improvement.

GDC Edge extends Google Cloud to customer edge locations using Anthos and a centralized control plane to ensure consistent management of distributed workloads.
