Technical Lead - IBM i / AS400 - Enterprise Wireline Billing Systems

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Technical Lead – IBM i / AS400 to support and enhance enterprise wireline billing systems within a telecommunications environment. This role requires a strong technical foundation on IBM i (AS400) combined with leadership capability to drive delivery, manage production support, and ensure operational stability across complex legacy applications. The candidate will play a key role in solution design, system enhancements, risk management, and transition continuity.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Application Ownership & Delivery
    • Own end-to-end lifecycle of IBM i (AS400) applications, including:Enhancements, Maintenance, Production support, Stability of RPGLE-based systems
    • Deliver solutions aligned with SDLC standards and enterprise controls
    • Ensure reliability of batch jobs, scheduled processes, and system integrations
  2. Solution Design & Technical Execution
    • Analyze business and technical requirements and perform impact assessments
    • Prepare solution designs, including; Technical specifications, Data mappings, Process flows, Operational procedures
    • Lead development and implementation of changes across legacy applications
  3. Technical Leadership
    • Provide hands-on leadership across development teams: Work allocation and planning, Effort estimation, Code reviews and design validation
    • Enforce development standards: Coding best practices, Documentation standards, Change and release management processes
    • Maintain delivery discipline and quality across releases
  4. Production Support & Stability
    • Lead incident resolution through: Troubleshooting, Root cause analysis (RCA), Defect investigation and fixes
    • Provide post-release validation and support for deployments
  5. Stakeholder Collaboration
    •    Collaborate with Business stakeholders, QA teams, Operations, Cross-functional delivery teams
    •    Ensure effective communication, delivery alignment, and prioritization
  6. Transition & Knowledge Management
    •    Drive knowledge transfer and operational readiness
    •    Identify and mitigate transition risks and knowledge gaps
    •    Improve: Documentation quality, Support ownership models, Long-term sustainability of systems

Required Skills and Experience

Must-Have Technical Skills
•    8+ years of hands-on experience with IBM i (AS400 / iSeries), RPG / RPGLE (free format), CL / CLLE, COBOL, SQL / Embedded SQL, DB2
•    Strong experience with: Batch processing and scheduled jobs, ILE architecture, Legacy application support and troubleshooting
•    Experience working with: Display files, subfiles, DDM
Telecom Domain Expertise (Preferred Strongly)
•    Experience with enterprise telecom billing systems, including: Billing & Rating, Message Processing, Accounts Receivable, Ordering systems
•    Experience with integrations: Web services, MQ / messaging platforms
Tools & Platforms
•    Proficiency with IBM i development/support tools: RDi, VS Code / GitHub Copilot, Implementer (MKS), Hawkeye, PKENCRYPT / PKZIP
Functional & Leadership Skills
•    Proven experience in Technical Lead capacity
•    Strong capabilities in: Estimation and delivery planning, Technical design and impact analysis, Code reviews and quality assurance
•    Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

Good-to-Have Skills

  • Exposure to: 
    • Modernization initiatives (API enablement, integration, cloud)
    • DevOps practices in IBM i environments
  • Experience working in large-scale legacy modernization or transformation projects
  • Knowledge of Agile/Scrum delivery models

Eligibility and Travel Requirements

  • Must be eligible to apply for Government of Canada (GoC) Clearance
  • Ability to work within secure and regulated environments
  • Strong ability to ramp up independently with minimal transition support
  • Location: GTA, Canada
  • Work environment: Hybrid (min. 3 days onsite/Capgemini office)

The base compensation range for this role in the posted location is: $83,144 - $195,060 CAD.

Capgemini provides compensation range information in accordance with applicable national, state, provincial, and local pay transparency laws. The base compensation range listed for this position reflects the minimum and maximum target compensation Capgemini, in good faith, believes it may pay for the role at the time of this posting. This range may be subject to change as permitted by law.

The actual compensation offered to any candidate may fall outside of the posted range and will be determined based on multiple factors legally permitted in the applicable jurisdiction.

These may include, but are not limited to: Geographic location, Education and qualifications, Certifications and licenses, Relevant experience and skills, Seniority and performance, Market and business consideration, Internal pay equity.

It is not typical for candidates to be hired at or near the top of the posted compensation range.

In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for additional compensation such as variable incentives, bonuses, or commissions, depending on the position and applicable laws.
