Network Operations Engineer- Tier I

Role Description

The Tier 1 Network Operations Engineer serves as the first line of support for client network environments, responsible for monitoring, incident management, service request handling, and change implementation across WAN, LAN, Wireless, Firewall, and Data center systems. This role ensures continuous service availability through proactive surveillance, timely troubleshooting, and effective coordination of maintenance and change activities. The engineer is expected to follow established procedures while maintaining high standards of accuracy, responsiveness, and documentation. The ideal candidate is customer-focused, result-oriented, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced, dynamic, and complex operational environment, while collaborating effectively with cross-functional and global teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to events generated by network monitoring tools or reported incidents using documented procedures, experience, and guidance from senior engineers or leadership
  • Create and manage incident tickets, ensuring ownership and progression throughout the lifecycle
  • Provide hands-on support across multiple technologies, including routers, switches, load balancers, firewalls, and wireless devices
  • Actively participate in technical bridge calls, delivering clear, concise, and technically accurate input during incidents and escalations
  • Utilize available tools to diagnose incidents and support team troubleshooting efforts
  • Open, track, and follow up on vendor cases related to active incidents
  • Perform routine maintenance and implement scheduled changes based on documented procedures
  • Contribute to event/alert threshold tuning activities
  • Ensure incidents and service requests are updated and resolved within SLA timelines
  • Execute proper shift handovers with clear communication and complete documentation for continuity
  • Create and update documentation including Knowledge Base (KB) articles, runbooks, and playbooks
  • Provide constructive feedback to improve processes and operational efficiency
  • Learn and adapt to new technologies through self-study, peer collaboration, and formal training
  • Support the creation and implementation of operational procedures and changes
  • Perform proactive and reactive monitoring using tools such as SevOne, Splunk, nGenius, Netcool, LogicMonitor, Forward Networks, ClearPass, and ThousandEyes
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to validate issues and drive resolution
  • Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Troubleshoot network issues across a wide range of technologies with speed and accuracy
  • Ensure work is delivered accurately and within SLA commitments

Role Requirements

Required:
✓ Must have active CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification. Any active CCNA level certification will be considered.
✓ 2 to 3 years’ experience in network engineering role. 2 years of solid work experience supporting Network Operations is required.
✓ A bachelor’s degree (or more) in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
✓ Strong understanding of the Network OSI model and TCP/IP Protocol Suite
✓ Solid understanding of IP Networking technologies (IPV4 and Theoretical IPV6)
✓ Strong knowledge of TCP/IP dynamic routing protocols (BGP, ISIS, OSPF, and EIGRP)
✓ Familiarity with network operating systems such as : Cisco IOS, IOS-XR, IOS-XE, NX-OS, PANOS and F5 Big IP
✓ Knowledge and experience with network device platforms such as Cisco (Catalyst, ISR, ASR, Nexus), Enterprise Wireless network platforms (Cisco and Aruba), Palo Alto (Midrange, Enterprise, Data Center Cloud NGFW, and Management Platforms), and F5 (BIG-IP iSeries, Viprion, LTM, DNS and APM),
✓ Knowledge and experience working with different enterprise data circuit types such as MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching), P2P, Internet, DWDM (Fiber-optic), Metro Ethernet, and SD-WAN
✓ Concrete knowledge and skills in LAN technologies such as VLAN, STP, VTP, FHRP (HSRP/VRRP/GLBP), and EtherChannel/Port-channel
✓ Strong knowledge and experience with network virtualization and segmentation: VLAN, VPN, VRF, VXLAN, SDN, and SD-WAN
✓ Extensive knowledge of network technologies such as Logical Overlays, QOS, ACLs, Multicast, Unicast and Anycast
✓ Proficient with MS Office applications (such as Visio, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint) and good documentation skills for processes and procedures (creating KBs, Runbooks, and network diagrams)
✓ Strong documentation skills for KBs, Runbooks, SOPs and diagrams
✓ High confidence communicating on technical bridge calls
✓ Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to explain complex technical topics to diverse audiences
✓ Ability to work well independently and collaboratively across cultures and technical disciplines
✓ Solid experience coordinating with vendors to drive incident resolution and SLA compliance

Preferred:
✓ Knowledge and experience with network monitoring, and analytics tools: SevOne, Splunk, nGenius, Netcool, Logic Monitor, Forward Networks, HPE Aruba ClearPass, Thousand Eyes
✓ Knowledge and understanding of scripting languages and automation: Python, Perl, Bash, PowerShell
✓ Possess knowledge and experience with ServiceNow or similar ITSM platforms
✓ Experience managing or configuring cloud networking: AWS, Azure, and GCP
✓ Proficiency with network troubleshooting tools: Wireshark, tcpdump, NetFlow, and Syslog
✓ Knowledge and understanding of Unix/Linux systems
✓ Knowledge and experience of NX-OS Data Center technologies and automation including: VDC, vPC, FabricPath, Fabric Extender (FEX), VXLAN, VTEP and NDFC
✓ Good understanding and hands-on experience with F5 Big-IP including: vCMP, LTM, GTM/DNS, and APM
✓ Knowledge and experience with Firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, Juniper SRX)
✓ Experience with terminal servers and OOB access (Opengear, ION, DIGI)
✓ Knowledge of DNS, DHCP, IPAM
✓ Knowledgeable in performing TCP/IP Network traces/packet captures with solid experience interpreting results
