Your role
Capgemini Engineering is looking for Nuclear Systems Engineering Consultants to join our rapidly growing team to support one of the UK’s leading nuclear organisations. Our portfolio of projects includes work across a variety of domains, including Nuclear (from new build to radioactive waste management), Defence, Aerospace and Rail. Capgemini’s Product and Systems Engineering Unit provides Systems Engineering, System Functional Safety Engineering and Software Assurance expertise to help our clients develop and deliver safety-critical systems to meet today’s increasingly challenging regulatory needs. Our work is essential in delivering demonstrable safety that satisfies industry regulators and acceptance authorities.

Current projects that we support include;
- system design development for Small Modular Reactors (SMR)
- a system and software development project at a Nuclear facility
- system integration and software development for a submarine command and control subsystem
- safety engineering consultancy for new and novel systems
Your profile
Key skills include:
- Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science-related field
- 2 years of experience in the nuclear sector
- Understanding of nuclear physics, nuclear safety, and radiation protection
- Familiarity with nuclear regulatory frameworks (e.g. ONR regulations)
- Adaptability and willingness to stay updated on evolving nuclear technologies and regulatory requirements
- Systems Engineering: requirements management, system modelling
- Design Development: optioneering, preliminary calculations, design reviews
- Safety: Hazard identification and analysis techniques, such as Functional Failure Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis and SIL determination.
- Experience of working in a multi-discipline engineering context (mechanical, electrical, systems, safety, human factors, security)
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain complex nuclear concepts to diverse audiences
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety and security
Your profile - Desirables
Desirable skills include:
- Master's degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience of design development and/or analysis of nuclear fuel handling systems.
- Knowledge and experience of nuclear power plant systems, advanced reactor designs (e.g., SMRs, Gen IV reactors), and waste management.
- Knowledge and experience of mechanical, structural or control & instrumentation applications in the nuclear sector.
- Knowledge and experience of IBM Rational DOORS, Capella, Siemens Teamcenter, Autodesk AutoCAD and Navisworks.
- Chartered or working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.
- Knowledge of system and software safety standards such as BS EN 61508, RTCA-DO-178 A/B/C, BS EN 26262, Def Stan 00-55, Def Stan 00-66, BS EN 50128 and the wider safety engineering standards and environments within which they operate.
