Job Title: Solution Architect (Payment Gateway) - Northampton
About the Job you are considering:
Provides architectural governance, design assurance, and hands-on support across Change and Run the Bank throughout the delivery lifecycle. Acts as a trusted advisor to business and delivery stakeholders, shaping solutions, influencing strategy, and guiding sourcing and commercial decisions. Drives complex technical decision-making, roadmap definition, and enterprise alignment while maintaining deep expertise and industry best practice awareness.

The places that you work from day to day will vary according to your role, your needs, and those of the business; it will be a blend of Company offices, client sites, and your home; noting that you will be unable to work at home 100% of the time.
Job Role:
- Own the development of conceptual, functional, and technical architectures for the portfolio, ensuring complete end-to-end solution accountability
- Ensure alignment of end-to-end designs across the full application delivery lifecycle, covering both application and infrastructure design and delivery
- Represent projects and solutions at Architecture Councils, driving review, challenge, and formal approval of proposed designs
- Review, challenge, and approve high-level and detailed business requirements, non-functional requirements, and detailed component-level designs
- Provide ongoing architecture guidance and hands-on support throughout the delivery lifecycle to Change the Bank and Run the Bank teams, including investigation support and root cause analysis for major issues
- Support detailed design activities where required to ensure solutions remain aligned to approved architectures and standards
- Work closely with Project Managers and Global Technology Sourcing to advise on supplier options, cost models, and sourcing strategies
- Ensure solution integrity, technical validity, and commercial considerations are fully represented in RFI/RFP processes and Proof of Concept evaluations
- Provide advice and guidance to business stakeholders in shaping the technology portfolio to meet business outcomes
- Deliver consultancy support for Stage 0 initiatives, including early solution shaping and indicative cost estimation
- Contribute to architectural governance by participating in peer reviews and supporting the broader solutioning community within Barclaycard COO
- Maintain a detailed understanding of, promote compliance with, and contribute to the evolution of relevant statutory, regulatory, internal, and external standards and codes of practice.
Job Skills:
- Define technology strategy, vision, and roadmaps for the portfolio within the Merchant Services Transaction Cycle, aligned to business priorities
- Apply enterprise architecture techniques to translate strategic business and technology objectives into a prioritized set of initiatives and delivery projects over a 3–5 year horizon
- Support the Systems Planning process by identifying interdependencies and ensuring proposed plans are technically viable and coherent
- Influence business strategy to maximize value realization through effective use of technology
- Maintain expert-level knowledge of relevant technical specialists through industry research, conferences, professional bodies, and engagement with leading practitioners
- Build and sustain strong relationships with technology vendors, manufacturers, system integrators, and supply partners
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices, both within financial services and across adjacent industries, and articulate these effectively
- Act as a recognized authority in the relevant technical specialism where appropriate
- Own and clearly articulate complex business and technical challenges, leading structured evaluations of solution options
- Assess internal and external solutions to identify the most cost-effective and compliant approach aligned with architectural principles
- Drive decision-making by presenting clear, evidence-based recommendations to senior executives
- Ensure all decisions support internal policy, external regulation, architectural resilience, and non-functional requirements.
