As a Backend Engineer, you will help design and deliver resilient, scalable, and secure digital services that support corporate banking journeys and customer outcomes. Working alongside Product Owners, Architects, Engineers, and Platform teams, you will contribute to modern digital capabilities, drive continuous improvement, and support the delivery of future-ready solutions. Hybrid working:

The places that you work from day to day will vary according to your role, your needs, and those of the business; it will be a blend of Company offices, client sites, and your home; noting that you will be unable to work at home 100% of the time.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver scalable, secure, and maintainable backend solutions that support critical business and customer outcomes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into effective technical solutions and measurable value.
  • Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, ensuring solutions are delivered to high quality and engineering standards.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to simplify processes, automate activities, and enhance delivery outcomes.
  • Drive operational excellence through proactive service ownership, performance optimisation, and effective incident resolution.
  • Support the design and evolution of modern, resilient architectures that enable long-term business growth and agility.
  • Ensure solutions align with organisational security, governance, risk, and compliance requirements.
  • Participate in peer reviews, knowledge sharing, and mentoring activities to strengthen engineering capability and foster a future-ready workforce.
  • Work closely with delivery and platform teams to enable efficient releases and reliable production services.
  • Champion innovation, including awareness and adoption of AI-assisted practices where appropriate to improve delivery effectiveness and customer value.

 

Must-Have Skills

  • Extensive hands-on experience delivering enterprise-scale backend application solutions.
  • Strong expertise in Java/J2EE development, object-oriented design principles, and enterprise application architecture.
  • Proven experience designing and building RESTful services and microservices-based solutions.
  • Strong experience with Java 17, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and event-driven architectures.
  • Good understanding of frontend integration patterns and experience collaborating across user interface and backend delivery teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Agile delivery methodologies and the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Experience applying engineering quality practices, automated testing approaches, and test-driven delivery principles.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex enterprise environments.
  • Experience supporting business-critical applications in large-scale organisations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders and contribute to collaborative team success.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies, including AI-enabled development capabilities, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.

 

Good-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with GitLab, GitLab CI/CD, Helm, SonarQube, Nexus, and Artifactory.
  • Experience working with cloud-native platforms and services, including AWS.
  • Knowledge of containerisation and orchestration technologies, including Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift.
  • Experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or similar solutions.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, and Prometheus.
  • Understanding of DevSecOps principles, secure software development practices, and security-focused engineering approaches.
  • Experience working within regulated Financial Services environments.
  • Understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) concepts, operational resilience, and service reliability practices.
  • Relevant cloud, DevOps, or engineering certifications.
