Senior Legal Counsel
About the job you’re considering
Capgemini’s global legal function includes more than 400 professionals, led from our Group Legal offices in Paris and supported by local and regional teams. The UK & Ireland Legal team comprises around 25 colleagues, primarily lawyers based in the UK and Poland. It is a collaborative and supportive team, offering exposure to a broad range of high-quality, strategically important legal work.
Capgemini is seeking an experienced non-contentious technology and commercial lawyer to join its UK & Ireland Legal team and support the Public Sector Market Unit. The role will provide practical, commercially focused advice across a varied portfolio of public sector opportunities and contracts, working closely with internal stakeholders and external clients on matters of differing scale, complexity and value.
This is a senior individual contributor role with substantial autonomy across the full deal lifecycle, from opportunity qualification and bid support through negotiation, contract signature and post-signature matters. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Legal Head of Public Sector and collaborate within Capgemini’s global legal function, applying the Group’s contracting principles, policies, business ethics and values.
We welcome applications from lawyers with strong commercial contracting experience gained in-house or in private practice. Experience of technology transactions and public procurement or public sector contracting will be particularly valuable.
Candidates should be qualified, or eligible to practise, as a lawyer in England and Wales, or hold an equivalent qualification relevant to the role. Appointment will be subject to the successful candidate meeting any right-to-work, client-access and UK security-vetting requirements applicable to the role.
Your Role
As a senior individual contributor, you will support - not lead - the Public Sector Market Unit. Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as a senior legal point of contact for allocated Public Sector matters, working with the Legal Head of Public Sector, business leaders and other stakeholders to support pipeline planning, prioritisation and timely delivery of legal advice.
- Advising across the full deal lifecycle, including opportunity qualification, tender and bid review, negotiation, signature and post-signature matters.
- Reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts for technology, outsourcing, managed services, consultancy, cloud, digital and engineering services.
- Providing clear legal risk assessments and pragmatic recommendations through relevant governance, approval and escalation processes.
- Supporting Capgemini’s compliance programme by identifying and escalating relevant legal and regulatory issues.
- Collaborating with UK and international legal colleagues, including coordinating work with team members in Poland and India and providing guidance, feedback and knowledge sharing where appropriate.
- Contributing to legal training, precedents, know-how and process improvements.
- Instructing and managing external counsel on allocated matters, where required.
Additional responsibilities:
The role may also involve supporting deal sign-off within delegated authority, developing and delivering legal training, drafting policies and guidance, assisting with dispute avoidance and resolution, and contributing to global legal initiatives or international transactions. From time to time, you may advise on non-client matters involving suppliers, partners and other third parties, and support compliance initiatives in areas such as competition law, export control, anti-bribery and corruption.
Your skills and experience
- Strong knowledge of commercial and contract law, including technology-related matters such as cloud services, digital solutions, data protection, cyber security and artificial intelligence.
- Experience advising on complex, high-value bids, transactions or projects, ideally involving public procurement or public sector customers.
- Sound commercial judgement and the ability to identify, assess, mitigate and clearly communicate legal risk.
- Excellent drafting, communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to tailor advice to different audiences.
- Confidence working with senior stakeholders and building effective relationships across sales, delivery, commercial, finance, security and other functions.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgement and manage competing priorities within demanding tender and negotiation timelines.
- A collaborative approach, with a willingness to share knowledge, provide peer support and work effectively with colleagues across locations.
- A practical interest in using technology, including AI-enabled tools, to improve legal service delivery.
- Ability to contribute to process improvement and deliver training in areas of expertise.
- Awareness of the external commercial, regulatory and policy environment relevant to Capgemini, particularly in the UK public sector.
Your Security Clearance
To be successfully appointed to this role you will need to undergo Baseline Personnel Security Standard checks.
There are no nationality or residency restrictions, although if you have resided outside of the UK within the last 3 years, further checks may be required.
There are other criteria and check required for BPSS, and throughout the recruitment process, you will be asked questions about your security clearance eligibility such as, but not limited to, country of residence and nationality.
