AWS API Engineer / Data Architect

Who You Will Be Working With

You will be part of the Data Platforms team within the Insights and Data Global Practice, which has seen strong growth and continued success across a variety of projects and sectors. Data Platforms is home to API Engineers, Data Engineers, Platform Engineers, Solutions Architects and Business Analysts focused on driving our customersdigital and data transformation using modern cloud platforms. We specialise in the latest frameworks, reference architectures and technologies across AWS, Azure and GCP, including API/microservices patterns and data platforms such as AWS-native analytics services and Snowflake.

As an AWS API Engineer / Data Architect at Capgemini, you will design and deliver secure, scalable API and microservices architectures across multiple client applications and services. You will define integration patterns and standards, shape data and document-store designs, and take ownership from solution design through build, deployment and production support, ensuring services are observable, reliable and cost-effective on AWS.

You will design and deliver secure, scalable, well-integrated APIs and microservices across multiple client applications and services, supporting system and data integration across distributed environments.

Security Clearance: To be successfully appointed to this role, must be eligible to obtain Security Check (SC)clearance.

To obtain SC clearance, the successful applicant must have resided continuously within the United Kingdom for the last 5 years, along with other criteria and requirements.

Throughout the recruitment process, you will be asked questions about your security clearance eligibility such as, but not limited to, country of residence and nationality.
Some posts are restricted to sole UK Nationals for security reasons; therefore, you may be asked about your citizenship in the application process.

The Focus of Your Role

You will be an integral part of teams delivering modern digital services on AWS, with primary responsibility for API and microservices architecture and system integration. You will design RESTful APIs and service boundaries, define integration standards, and collaborate with product, delivery and cybersecurity stakeholders to ensure secure access patterns, strong observability, and smooth deployments and cutovers. Where required, you will also contribute to data architecture decisions (e.g., PostgreSQL and document stores) to enable robust end-to-end solutions.
Key responsibilities (API & data architecture):

  • Design and implement serverless and microservices-based API architectures on AWS (e.g., Lambda, API Gateway) aligned to product roadmaps.
  • Define and apply RESTful API design patterns and integration standards; support API lifecycle management, documentation and versioning.
  • Support system and data integration across distributed services, including event-driven patterns where appropriate.
  • Assess and address technical debt, recommending pragmatic modernisation approaches.
  • Support deployment planning, cutover activities and post-go-live stabilisation.
  • Contribute to document store and data architecture design (e.g., PostgreSQL and document stores) and collaboration with data engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with cybersecurity and delivery teams to ensure secure, observable solutions (logging, monitoring, audit)
  • Integrate applications with identity providers and enforce secure access patterns (e.g., IAM, token-based authentication).

What You'll Bring

You will bring strong, hands-on experience delivering API and integration solutions within complex environments, with an understanding of regulatory obligations and the need for trusted, mission-critical services. You will be able to design secure, scalable and well-governed RESTful APIs and microservices on AWS, applying consistent standards for identity, access control, observability, auditability and operational resilience. You will be comfortable collaborating with stakeholders to translate outcomes into pragmatic architectures and delivery plans, and you will bring strong engineering discipline, documentation and teamwork skills to help teams deliver sustainable capabilities end-to-end.
Required skills & experience (API & architecture):

  • Strong experience designing and building APIs and microservices architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS serverless technologies (e.g., AWS Lambda, Amazon API Gateway).
  • Solid understanding of RESTful APIs, integration patterns and distributed systems; exposure to GraphQL is a plus.
  • Experience working across the full delivery lifecycle, from design through deployment and production support.
  • Ability to communicate architecture decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as an AWS API Engineer / Data Architect, designing and delivering APIs and microservices in production environments.
  • Strong expertise in AWS services used for API and platform delivery (e.g., Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, IAM, VPC, Route 53, ECR) and experience applying security and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with deployment and operations practices (CI/CD, release planning, cutover, post-go-live stabilisation) and observability tooling (e.g., CloudWatch and/or ELK, Prometheus, Grafana).
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Python) with strong software engineering practices (Git, code review, unit testing, CI/CD) and an ability to troubleshoot production issues.
  • A continuous learning mindset, ideally with progress toward AWS certification (e.g., AWS Certified Developer  Associate or AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate) or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant certifications (desirable): AWS Certified Developer  Associate, AWS Certified Solutions Architect  Associate/Professional, and/or AWS Certified Security Specialty.

Technologies you may work with:

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS): Lambda, API Gateway, Aurora RDS, EC2, Route 53, ECR, STS, VPC, S3.
  • API, Integration & Security: RESTful APIs, Apollo GraphQL; AWS IAM, token-based authentication, external identity providers.
  • Data & Messaging: PostgreSQL, Apache Kafka, document stores.
  • Engineering & Operations: CI/CD pipelines; ELK stack; Prometheus, Grafana.
