OT Engineer
Your role
As an OT Engineer, you will provide hands-on engineering expertise across utilities, water, wastewater and other critical infrastructure environments. Working within consulting delivery teams, you will assess and support the modernisation of PLC, RTU, SCADA, telemetry and control systems, conducting site surveys, engineering assessments and solution design activities. You will help clients understand their current OT landscape, identify opportunities for standardisation and improvement, and contribute to migration and modernisation programmes across complex brownfield environments. The role also offers the opportunity to develop expertise in IT/OT convergence, industrial data integration, edge technologies and connected operational architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct OT site surveys and assessments to understand control systems, field assets, communications, operational dependencies and data flows across distributed environments.
- Evaluate existing PLC, RTU, SCADA and telemetry estates, identifying lifecycle risks, interoperability challenges, resilience improvements and standardisation opportunities.
- Support control-system modernisation and migration programmes by providing practical engineering input into target-state architectures, solution design and implementation roadmaps.
- Collaborate with operators, engineers, suppliers and stakeholders to produce clear technical recommendations and contribute to emerging IT/OT convergence initiatives involving technologies such as OPC UA, MQTT and edge-to-cloud connectivity.
Your profile
You are an experienced OT or Industrial Automation Engineer with a strong understanding of PLCs, RTUs, SCADA, telemetry and control systems within complex operational environments. Comfortable working across brownfield estates, you can carry out site-based assessments, identify practical engineering risks and constraints, and contribute to modernisation and migration initiatives. You bring a collaborative, consultancy-minded approach, working effectively with operators, engineers and stakeholders while providing clear technical recommendations. Experience within utilities, water or wastewater environments is highly desirable, along with an interest in emerging IT/OT convergence technologies.
Key Requirements
- Strong practical experience of industrial automation, operational technology and control systems, including PLCs, RTUs, SCADA, telemetry, field instrumentation and OT communications.
- Proven ability to conduct OT site surveys, engineering assessments and technical reviews across distributed operational environments, identifying risks, dependencies and improvement opportunities.
- Understanding of brownfield modernisation challenges, including lifecycle management, resilience, availability, maintainability, system integration and standardisation across multi-vendor estates.
- Knowledge of industrial networking and protocols such as Modbus, IEC 104 and OPC UA, combined with strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills; experience within utilities, water or wastewater sectors is highly advantageous.
